We all want to be happy in our work lives; however career satisfaction has eluded many of us no matter how many times we have changed jobs and careers. It is easy for us to identify what we do not like in our work, but find it difficult to identify what will truly bring us career satisfaction. How many times have you been asked, “What do you want to do when you grow up?” For too many of us that question echoes off the walls of our minds. We tolerate the pain of feeling stuck, unhappy and unfulfilled by our work, and often do not know how to make the right career move for us. CareerCounseling.com’s Self-Assessment Planning & Coaching Guide is designed to serve as a resource to complement your career coaching sessions and to provide you with practical tools, reliable information and the motivation to help you tackle the steps necessary to achieve career satisfaction. Your career coach will outline the steps you will need to take and will guide you as you move forward in a focused way toward bringing clarity and momentum to your career. The goal is to help you weave who you really are with what you do.
When working with a career coach we sometimes secretly want them to tell us what to do. The only way career coaching works is for you to take responsibility for implementing each step while using your career coach to listen, guide and empower you through the process. Rediscovering your passions and pursuing them is not a simple task, but one that will enrich your life and ultimately bring you the joy, passion and meaning that you have been missing.
As we move forward we will first consider your vision of the future then reflect on your guiding values, interests, skills, personality traits as seen by you and perceived by others. Once we have a clear idea of who you are and what you have and want to offer to a prospective employer, then we will identify what types of careers and work environments will be the “best fit” for you. We recommend that you begin this process by completing Career Testing using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator as a way of clarifying your personality preferences in relation to how you are energized, how you take in information, how you make decisions and how you approach your lifestyle. This information is of tremendous value as you work with your career coach on defining your career path.
There are a variety of ways to get started with your personalized Career Assessment. You may need to start from scratch, which would mean that it is best to start with Career Testing. If you have completed career testing, and are familiar with your results, then you are ready to start the Career Assessment process. If you are not sure where to start, or just need a jumpstart, then you may want to participate in a Career Jumpstart Strategy Session before jumping into Career Assessment. However, if you are ready to commit to the process of uncovering your interests, values and strengths and how they relate to your future career satisfaction then the Self-Assessment Phase (PHASE I) is for you. Following the Self-Assessment Phase or if you already have an idea of what you want to do, but would like to thoroughly research it then the Career Research & Exploration Guide (PHASE II) is for you. Sometimes the only thing you may need is a bit of research into prospective employers that could potentially hire you and/or the salary range you can expect for a particular position. If that is the case, then you may simply need our Company Research & Salary (PHASE III) session on how to conduct this type of research. If you want the whole Career Assessment Coaching/Testing Package then that is available as well. It is all-inclusive (Career Jumpstart Strategy Session, Career Testing, Phase I, Phase II and Phase III).
Self-Assessment: Interests, Values & Strengths (Phase I)
Following our initial consultation, you will complete a series of exercises to help you discover your motivated interests, personal and professional values and key strengths. Once your self-assessment is complete, your Career Coach will review it and begin the process of clarifying your needs and wants, your short and long-term goals, and the next steps necessary in identifying satisfying career options for you. Prerequisite: It is best if you complete this phase after completing the MBTI Testing. Two Career Assessment Coaching Sessions. $300.
Career Research & Exploration (Phase II)
Once you have identified satisfying career options, then you will need to research those options both online and in person. You will be guided through a series of strategies designed to help you gain a realistic and in-depth perspective of each career that interests you with emphasis on both a job market analysis and a corporate culture analysis. At the conclusion of this phase you will have a clear vision of the best career option for you based on who you are, what you have to offer and what the job market has to offer. Prerequisite: You will need to have a fairly clear idea of potentially satisfying and realistic career options prior to the Career Research & Exploration Session. $300.
Company & Salary Research (Phase III)
If you have a clear vision of your career direction, but would like assistance in learning how to effectively identify and research potential employers to determine which ones may be the best fit for you, then this session is for you. If you don’t have the time or simply would like someone else to do the work for you, we would be happy to provide targeted Company & Salary Research for you. Prerequisite: You will need to know which career option is most realistic and satisfying for you prior to the Company & Salary Research Session. $150.
